Our drivers and colleagues have chosen Alzheimer’s Society as our new charity partner for 2018 and 2019.
As well as raising cash, we are showing we care by working towards being dementia-friendly to help thousands of our customers who are affected by the condition.
Alzheimer’s Society estimates there are 60,000 people in the East Midlands with a form of dementia – including around 14,000 in Derbyshire, 14,000 in Nottinghamshire and 12,000 in Leicestershire.
We will also be rolling out the Alzheimer’s Society’s Dementia Friends programme, which includes learning about the everyday things bus drivers can do to help people with dementia.
Lauren Curry from Alzheimer’s Society said: “It is an absolute pleasure to be united against dementia with trentbarton for the next two years. Dementia is set to be the 21st century’s biggest killer, with someone developing the condition every three minutes.
“Transport companies, such as trentbarton, provide much needed accessibility for people living with dementia and carers supporting those with the condition. We are very much looking forward to what trentbarton has in store for Alzheimer's Society.”
Alzheimer’s Society says bus stations and stops are often busy and confusing places and people living with dementia often avoid travelling. Access to reliable, affordable and safe transport is important for older people to maintain contact and avoid loneliness and isolation.
Money raised by our depots and teams over the next two years will help the charity’s work which includes providing information and support, improving care, funding research and create lasting change for people affected by dementia. In the East Midlands the charity provides support including Dementia Cafés, Singing for the Brain sessions, Dementia Support Workers and Side by Side volunteers.
Our own training team have incorporated dementia awareness into its programme for new drivers and refresher training for existing teams.
